The Picture Your Kids Will Treasure Most

There's something that happens at almost every session I photograph.

Whether it's a family session, senior pictures, maternity photos, or even an extended family session, there's almost always one person trying to stay out of the picture. And nine times out of ten... it's Mom.

I'll smile and say, "Come on, Mom... jump in for just one!" Almost every single time, I hear the same things.

"I didn't do my hair."

"I don't like having my picture taken."

"I'll just let the kids be in these."

"Maybe next time."

Can I tell you something? Your kids don't care.

They're not looking at whether your hair was perfect that day. They don't notice the extra ten pounds you've been worrying about or that little wrinkle you see every time you look in the mirror. They don't care that you threw your hair in a messy bun because you were running late.

They just see Mom.

The one who makes them feel safe. The one who always knows where their favorite sweatshirt is. The one who gives the best hugs, cheers the loudest at games, kisses scraped knees, stays up when they're sick, and somehow keeps the whole world spinning even when she's exhausted.

That's who they see.

I think as moms, we're so used to being behind the camera that we forget we're part of the story too. We spend years making sure everyone else has photos to look back on, but somehow convince ourselves that we don't need to be in them.

I know that feeling because I'm guilty of it too.

There are so many photos of my girls growing up that I took. Birthday parties, vacations, first days of school, random afternoons in the backyard... I captured all of those moments. But when I look back through them, I realize how often I wasn't actually in the picture.

And honestly... those are the photos I wish I had.

The funny thing about photographs is that they change over time. Today they're just pictures sitting on your phone. A few years from now they'll remind you of a season of life you almost forgot. Someday, they'll become priceless.

Your little ones won't always reach for your hand. Your teenagers won't always roll their eyes when you ask for a hug. Life has a way of moving faster than we ever expect, and suddenly the things we thought we'd always remember start to fade.

That's why I always encourage moms to step in for "just one." Not because everything has to be perfect. Not because you finally lost the weight.

Not because your makeup turned out exactly how you wanted.

But because your kids deserve to have photographs with the person who has loved them through every stage of their lives.

Years from now, they won't be looking at your hair or your outfit. They won't care what size jeans you wore or whether you thought you looked tired that day. They're just going to be thankful you're there.

So the next time your photographer says, "Mom... come jump in for one," I hope you say yes.

Not because it's for Facebook.

Not because it's for the Christmas card.

Not even because it's for you.

Because one day, your kids are going to look for that photo.

And I promise... they'll never wish you had stayed behind the camera.
